Just a couple of nights ago, I watched the Grammy awards. It’s been years since I haven’t watched it, but just the ad break alone caught my attention. But I remember at the time, when watching the Grammys was a thing where, I’ll go up to twenty years back (2005,) when Green Day were KILLING IT with their recent record release, the Black Eyed Peas, along with Gwen Stefani were coming up at the time. Nowadays, I feel as if it’s the same thing. You’ve got a-lot of new and emerging musicians, and a couple of classics too which makes it a neat balance. The only problem I had was finding out that Beyoncé wins both categories, “Country Album of the Year,” and “Artist of the Year.” I mean no, that’s just wrong. Pop music category, I get it, but not country. I mean c’mon, it should’ve gone to Chris Stapleton where his record revolves around country music, or even Post Malone where you’re beginning to take notice of him being active within the genre. And look, as odd as it gets, these days musical genres are mixed where music categories sort of seem just a-bit lost. But,I’ve gotta point out that there were lots of sweet performances, and collaborations that night. Sabrina Carpenter impressed me with her cabaret style interpretation of her hit Espresso. Chapelle Roan was surrounded by a bunch of clowns while singing Pink Pony Club that took you by surprise. Benson Boone was performing backflips while interpreting Beautiful Things, and Shaboozy got the floor to vibe along towards his instant radio hit A Bar Song. In fact, there were many tributes being made to Los Angeles after the devastating fires, and donations were held to support families that have been impacted by this matter. But God the collaborations were INSANE! Bruno Mars, and Lady Gaga performed The Mamas and the Papas California Dreamin’ that sounded close to Jose Feliciano’s version. And at the beginning of the ceremony, there were a couple of known musicians including St. Vincent, and Sheryl Crow who performed Randy Newman’s I Love L.A. That was totally unexpected, but they NAILED IT. The Quincy Jones tribute left me speechless! I mean, first you’ve got Herbie Hancock, and Stevie Wonder. That’s just more than enough! But then, Cynthia Erivo was being accompanied by this jazz big band while interpreting Frank Sinatra’s Fly Me to the Moon. And, Janelle Monáe’s cover of Michael Jackson’s Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough was just WOW! So yeah, the Grammys are still worth watching.
