Random Access Memories

To me, I always loved listening to “Random Access Memories,” by Daft Punk. It’s such a great record, because It takes me back to a time where there was some sort of synchronism going on. Everyone understood one another, and all that mattered was just boiled down into two single words: enjoy life. And it’s the year 2013, the year that I was graduating from highschool, and a buddy of mine came with the CD, saying to us, “You’ve gotta check this out, they’ve even got Nile Rodgers from Chic playing the guitar parts!” He played the record for all of us during our lunch hour, and we immediately became obsessed with it.

The record kicks off with a bang. “Give Life Back to Music,” where you have one repetitive melodic jam, and the Daft Punk robots repeating this simple phrase, “Let the music in tonight Just turn on the music Let the music of your life Give life back to music.”Music is an essential to life, just as air, and water. It’s impossible to live without music, especially in my world, because we as a society constantly give life to music, whether it is random sounds, or even just a simple harmony, it stands as a need for our day to day lives. Especially mine, where music is in my blood at a very young age, and trying to separate me from it would be impossible to even think of it!

The record does not only hover over the idea of giving life to music, but paying homage to the ones who influenced the industry. Listening close to Daft Punk, you not only get that sense of pop, dance, but disco influences as well. You can feel the influence by listening to their hit, “Get Lucky,” but they even paid homage to this magical producer. “Giorgio by Moroder,” blew my mind, where you’ve got Italian composer and musical producer Giorgio Moroder recounting how music played a big part in his life, integrating futuristic sounds within his compositions, while listening to this ambient noise coming in the background. But then, specifically at 1:47, Moroder ends the conversation by saying, “My name is Giovanni Giorgio, but everybody calls me Giorgio,” and at that moment, Daft Punk then drops a fantastic futuristic beat.

And, I can’t forget to tell you about “Instant Crush,” where I was obsessed with it so much that every morning, I just kept looping this song over, and over again. It’s the beat that goes perfectly along with the melody that gets to you, no joke, it got to me! It feels as if there’s this 1980s influence added to it, but man, It’s such a sweet collaboration between Julian Casablanca, and Daft Punk. The melody is beautifully balanced, along Casablanca’s futuristic vocal tone. And, he’s elaborating on the idea of a “summer crush, ” that takes back memories of my summer crush, how I did everything that I could to try and spend time with her, but in the end, we took our own separate way.
