Music as a Sense of Shelter

I’m sure that we’ve all felt low at some point in our lives, where we didn’t know where to turn to. I know I’ve had many times where I didn’t know what was next. From heartbreaks all the way towards failing a class in school, it felt as if I was facing the end of the world. Although, one of the things that kept me going was learning, and listening to lots of music. I’ve made references on how we tend to share an emotional connection, and feel close towards this form of entertainment. But I’m pretty sure that it plays a bigger role for all of us when it comes to acting as a form of shelter. At any point we can be facing any desperate times whether we’re all on our all time highs or lowest points, and then we seek towards music, getting us through any moment. I’ve mentioned in my previous posts on how I turned towards Band on the Run by Paul McCartney and Wings when I got my first heartbreak back in 2016. It was an instantaneous decision for me at that moment. Listening to it gave me some sort of security where its engaging melody, lyrics, and backbeat helped me going through that moment. Even though the song has nothing to do with being heartbroken by the girl that I loved, It helped me move on. I mean think about this, music tends to comfort us whenever we feel something that doesn’t really go our way, and disrupt our emotions. I’ve never really thought of it that way previously, but over the years, it clicked, and made sense. And if we dig a bit further, we tend to find ourselves relating to a song, or a record after experiencing some sort of disruptive situation. There’s an emotional connection that’s happening between us and the music where it acts as a form of shelter. But let me make this clear that it doesn’t always have to revolve around destructive times. It could also be at our high times as well, where the music will shelter us from overcoming a great situation. I remember listening to Brown Sugar by The Rolling Stones after completing my final examination during my university days. The song has a great uplifting beat that sort of gives you a sense of accomplishment, and excitement on what’s going to happen next. In the end, we can all say that music will always be there for us, no matter any given situation.
