French disco is NOT DEAD! I repeat. French disco is NOT DEAD. It’s hard to think of this musical style from dying when you’ve got this wonderful musician Clara Luciani, keeping it alive, especially with her 2021 release titled, “Coeur, ” that still gets played, and danced to this day. Even before this record, Luciani put out an amazing record called, “Sainte-Victoire,” in 2018, where she’s playing with disco elements, but she’s more into the funk scene, but I won’t spoil it for now, we’ll save that for later. And, what’s interesting is how I managed to miss my chance at getting tickets to her two sold out shows at the Les Francos de Montreal music festival. The best part is how it annoys me to this day. Ahhhhh! But years later, and in 2021, she released this superb record titled, “Coeur.” There was a certain point in my life where I was looping this record, because I was slowly submerging myself lightly into the funk scene, but still embracing the pop scene. It amazes me because Luciani finds a way of keeping disco alive in nearly every song. She takes the risk of finding ways to incorporate it in her songs, along with some funk, and pop melodies as well..
These days, it’s kinda hard to find musicians taking a risk, and trying to revive a musical genre, especially disco. And the chances of us running into a musician with that special creativity is kinda rare because most of the time, it’s always going to be centered on mainstream pop beats that will continuously loop on commercial radio stations. Don’t get me wrong, some of them are good, sure, but when overplayed, it gets irritated, dull, and boring. We should learn to give a chance to musicians with that special creativity, because it gives a chance to the listeners on opening up their musical horizons and discovering something new.
The record kicks off with the sound of a heartbeat, kinda reminding me of “Speak to Me,” by Pink Floyd. But don’t get confused, because it has a different take, and this is called “Coeur.” The energy of this song is great. You’ve got your vocal harmonies, a liveliness beat, a soft piano break, and the slapping of the electric bass. Bonus points, she continues to express the idea that love shall never be killed. Amazing. But, my personal favourite is, “Respire Encore.” And, you’ve got no idea how many times I’ve kept looping this song over and over again, it’s addicting, well for me. What more can I say on this engaging disco beat, while she reiterates the idea of enjoying the present moment by dancing to this great melody. Luciani’s vocal harmonies perfectly reflect the melody, that’s done with a synthesizer. Same goes for “Amour Toujours.” AND GET THIS. I thought the entire time that it was a string ensemble conducting this melody. Either way, it’s so good! It’s just insane how each song resembles some sort of throwback. I feel like the melody is encapsulated, preserved, only to be released, and discovered within the present. NOW.
