Nothing to Write About

It’s pretty wild when you realize one of your favorite musicians released a song with nothing to write about—no deep idea, no clear topic—just vibes. And yet, it becomes a hit. That’s not something you see often because most artists will dig for inspiration or improvise until they land on something solid. But Sound and Vision (1977), by David Bowie? That’s a whole different story. The production is brilliant—funky, energetic, and laced with those signature synthesizers that add a mysterious edge. It’s simple, yet completely captivating. And then you get to Bowie’s lyrics: “Nothing to do, nothing to say. Blue, blue. I will sit right down. Waiting for the gift of sound and vision.” You can feel that he had nothing much to say, yet somehow, he turned that nothingness into a creative masterpiece. Even if you think this song is about, well, nothing, you have to give credit where it’s due. Not only did Bowie improvise his way into inspiration, but he also crafted something beautifully composed. I would’ve loved to be in that room when he wrote it—just to see how that moment unfolded.
