During these previous posts, I’ve expressed how music tends to impact our lives. And as you may know by now, I witness it on a daily basis. I consume it, I read about it, I just love it, PERIOD! But, if I’m going to go beyond my appreciation for music, then we gotta grasp it from the source. Sure, frequenting record shops, collecting records, reading about music and talking with others develops an impact, and overtime, influences your taste. But, it’s impossible for me to leave out social media. How it played such a huge impact not only for me, but record collectors, musicians, and the curious who are seeking for something new. From a musicians perspective, it’s great, and practical. It’s a gateway into the world at exposing their music, and if they dare to add a couple of hashtags, then they can achieve thousands of views. Who knows! Or if we look at a different perspective where, anyone who is willing to share their love for music, talking about the records that have impacted their lives, or even just recommending unknown musical gems will connect with others who are willing to dive right in. And, I’m part of that group who’s willing to dive right in. I enjoy using social media to not only share my love for music, but to check out records that I’ve never heard of before. Without social media, I wouldn’t stumble upon musicians like Marie “Queenie” Lyons, or even Common Saints. It maybe would’ve been possible, but how many years would it take me to discover them? Quite a while! And it’s fascinating too at how this interconnects with my previous post on music streaming services. Think about this, you’re scrolling on your social media, Facebook, Instagram…whatever. You then come across a snippet from a record that catches your attention. Cool. At that very moment, you want more, and you use your Spotify, Apple Music to look up the album. The results? Well, not only you’ve got their entire album, but their entire discography as well. That’s what I’ve done over the course of summer 2024, which helped me to shape even more my musical taste, and grasp towards new musical genres. I’d also tend to come across content creators that would curate Spotify playlists on purpose so that they can share with everyone their discoveries, and gems with the rest of the world!
