I remember when Spotify appeared in our lives for the first time. I was still in high school, and none of us couldn’t believe it. And I was convincing my friends that this will revolutionize, change, and impact the music industry. And you can tell that over the course of time, more and more people are gravitating towards music streaming platforms. However, as good as it could get, there’s some controversy behind them. If we tend to dig a-little bit deeper, we can understand the musicians’ perspective, along with us, the user’s perspective. Musicians have the willpower of putting not only themselves out there, but most importantly their music.. There are some out there that depend on streaming services as a source of revenue. Of course It’s doable, but you’re gonna need lots of streams, since each stream is almost less than half a penny. And, it’s best to have something on the side. Think about it, if you’re gonna be dependent on music streaming revenues, then you won’t make much to support the music. The cost of production, and mastering the record can go through the roof. So it’s best to have revenue on the side like selling tickets or merch to help fund up the music. And if you’re able to be dependent on the revenue off of music streaming platforms, and continue to push out cool records, then all I can do is tip my hat to you. But if we now shift our attention towards the consumer’s perspective, in fact my perspective, it’s quite different. As you may know, I’m an avid music fan, music junkie….I just love listening to music, HANDS DOWN! And to me, one of my favourite mediums for consuming music would be listening to an album on vinyl. A medium where you just have to listen to the entire record. Flipping it over to side two, and while you’re doing so, you’re still ruminating about that last song. But the challenge that I face is how some records are not only hard to find, but if you do come across a rarity, then you’re gonna have to make your wallet cry. Here enters my music streaming services, Spotify, and Apple Music. The simplicity of looking up any record in the palm of my hand, and listening to it fully is revolutionary. Think about it, you can store more records on your phone than your physical record collection and still have space for more! You can wake up ‘chill one morning, go on your phone, open your music streaming platform, and check out any band’s latest release of the day. You find a musician you have never heard of before. Cool. You then look ’em up on Spotify, or Apple Music, and you their entire discography!
